The results of the past, present process and possibilities of the future
in the moving pictures business were brought to the attention of Lewiston and Auburn people by Eugene Farnsworth of Boston, president of the Society Players’ Film Co., at a banquet in the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce rooms, Wednesday evening. Mr. Farnsworth is a lecturer of note as well as a photographer and pioneer in the moving picture business. Beside his masterly presentation of the story of the moving picture he called to the attention of the local people the financial possibilities of the business. It is hoped more New England people will purchase stock in these companies.
50 years ago, 1967
The president of the Lewiston Police Relief Association today supported the physical fitness program instituted by the Police Commission recently, but he indicated that at least three members of the department felt that the time they devoted to the program should be city time, and not their own. Officer Frank Kelly issued the statement after the association held its regular monthly meeting this morning. Kelly noted it had earlier been Indicated in a news story that the association did not support the program, and therefore he would like to clarify the matter.
25 years ago, 1992
In a reversal of a decision made three weeks ago, 67 union workers at Crest Shoe, Lewiston, on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a severance pay package proposed by company officials. Ballet Makers Inc., the parent company of Crest Shoe, announced last January that Crest Shoe would shut down by June 1 and its operations relocated to Alrose Shoe in Exeter, N.H. Alrose is also a division of Ballet Makers. As a result of the closing, some 80 Crest employees will be laid off between April and June. The severance package accepted by employees applies to both union and non-union workers, including the nearly 35 employees laid off last October.
