WINTHROP — Winthrop High School has announced that senior Jacob Edward Hickey has been selected by faculty members to receive the 2017 Principal’s Award.

Hickey is the son of John Hickey and Catherine Hoffman-Hickey of Winthrop.

During his four years at Winthrop High School, Hickey has maintained an excellent scholastic record while also participating in many co-curricular activities. 

Hickey was a member of the soccer team in ninth grade and the cross-country team in 10th, 11th and 12th grades, including being captain his senior year. As a cross-country athlete, Jake holds the 5-kilometer school record and was named a Mountain Valley Conference All-Star, is a western Maine champion and a state runner-up and an all-New England member.

As a member of the basketball team, which he participated in every year and was captain senior year, Hickey was named the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2017 and named to the McDonald’s all-state team and all-state academic team and the MPA Class C player of the tourney – southern Maine.

Hickey was also a member of the baseball team every year. He was named a scholar-athlete delegate to the Mountain Valley Conference Student Leadership Council for grades nine and 11.

He is a member of the National Honor Society, grade 11 and 12, and is a senior representative of the Student Council, as well as being named to the Winthrop High School Varsity Club.

In the community, Hickey is a volunteer at the Maine Veterans’ Home and is a volunteer counselor in the Winthrop Recreation Basketball program. When his busy schedule allows, he enjoys playing the piano.

He plans to attend a college in Maine majoring in sports medicine.

On April 1, Hickey and Principal Keith Morin will attend an MPA honors luncheon in Bangor, where they will join other MPA Principals’ Award winners from across the state.

The honors luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of 10 $1,000 scholarships.
