RUMFORD — George B. Gionet, 82, of Hanover passed away Tuesday, March 14, at Rumford Hospital.
George was born in Lewiston on Dec. 26, 1934, the only son of the late Prosper and Theresa (Linehan) Gionet.
He was educated in Lewiston schools and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of 1953. After graduation, he worked for the Lewiston Gas and Light Co.
In 1955, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served four years as a Navy corpsman and was stationed in Navy hospitals in Long Island, N.Y., Bethesda, Md., and San Diego, Calif.
He married Mary Lou Owens in St. Joseph’s Church in Lewiston on Nov. 23, 1957. That same day they left and drove across country to San Diego, Calif. They lived there for two years.
1n 1959, George was honorably discharged from the Navy. He and Mary drove back to Maine, bought a home and settled down in Hanover. There they raised their four sons. He was employed at Boise Cascade Paper Group in the technical services department. He retired in 1996 after 37 years of service.
George was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior, a Eucharistic minister and an altar server for many years.
He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, long walks, good food, family gatherings, reading and traveling. Besides crossing the country twice, they made many trips to Canada. Their most important trip was to Rome and the Holy Land.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou (Owens) Gionet of Hanover; his four sons, Stephen E. Gionet and wife, Linda, of Galveston, Texas, Michael G. Gionet Sr. and wife, Nancy, of Bethel, Mark J. Gionet of Lewiston, and Timothy P. Gionet and wife, Kay, of Sabattus; a sister, Claire Walker of Poland Spring; eight grandchildren, Kelly Jones and husband, Roy, of Lewiston, Michael Gionet Jr. and wife, Kristina, of Virginia, Curtis Gionet and wife, Amanda, of Florida, Heather Benson and husband, David, of Florida, Scott Harrelson and wife, Crystal, of North Carolina, Heather Harrelson of South Carolina, Brandon Tong of Galveston, Texas, and Adam Tong and wife, Karina, of Galveston, Texas; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Mary E. Politis; and two brothers-in-law, Anthony F. Politis Sr. and Gerry Walker.
