MEXICO — In the near future, people may be rolling the dice on a replica of the classic Monopoly board game, made just for the town of Mexico.

The Mexico Bicentennial Committee has begun the task of seeking sponsors for MexicOpoly, according to member Sheryl Briggs. She said the committee got the idea from the town of Weld, which produced a similar replica game for its bicentennial.

Letters went out in early March to all of the businesses in Mexico to let them know about the events and fundraisers the committee is doing.

Briggs said they have to raise $8,000 to cover the cost of the game.

She said one business has made a donation so far.

The committee has several ideas for the board game, including having the four railroads instead be each of the four churches in town.

The committee is also looking to create two identical historical Mexico quilts.

“We’re looking for any town citizen or businesses who would like to either create a design by cross-stitch, needlepoint, iron-on transfer, photos, etc. — anything that makes you think of Mexico,” Briggs said.

The goal is to make two identical quilts, “so we can have one of the town to keep, and the other one will be raffled off,” she said.

Briggs said perhaps the town’s quilt will be placed on the back wall of the conference room at the Town Hall.

People can pick up their two 8½- by 8½-inch quilting squares at the Mexico Town Office during regular business hours.

“They can take them home and create a design on them,” Briggs said.

She said two Mexico residents, Polly Laskey and Marlene Gile, will guide the committee to create these quilts. Gile teaches a quilting class at Region 9.

In other events, there will be a Prize-A-Day calendar raffle during May. Sales for the calendars are underway. Calendars will be sold for $5 and a prize will be drawn on each day of the month in May. Car washes will take place May 13 and June 17 behind the Mexico Fire Station. Donations will be accepted.

Mexico will celebrate its bicentennial anniversary on Feb. 13, 2018.

The committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month beginning at 6 p.m. and on the fourth Thursday of each month beginning at 6 p.m. at the Mexico Town Office Conference Room. New members are encouraged to join.
