TURNER — School Administrative District 52 Adult & Community Education has announced its upcoming classes. All classes are held at 486 Turner Center Road unless otherwise noted. 

ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 22.  ServSafe is the nationally recognized certification required of certain staff in restaurants and other places that prepare and/or serve food. Participants will learn what they need to know about handwashing, contamination prevention, foodborne pathogens and pest management. Designed for food service staff, managers, chefs, directors and kitchen managers. A re-certification test will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 22. Registration deadline is Friday, April 7. Tuition: $165.  

SAD 52 Substitute Training: 5:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 3. This course is one step in the substitute teacher application process. Participants will learn about SAD 52 school expectations, teachers’ lesson plans and assertive discipline. A high school diploma is required, but a college degree is preferred. Tuition: Free.

Notary Public Training: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4. The primary duty of a notary is to formally witness signatures on paper documents and, in Maine, they can also officiate weddings. Tuition: $40.

Functions, Settings & Menus — It’s Complicated: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, April 4 and 11. Today’s digital cameras have a variety of features. The course will discuss image size and quality, shooting options and menu choices that will make a difference in the sharpness of photos. Tuition: $49. 

Essential Oils — A Natural Option: 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 4.Participants will learn how to use essential oils for health and wellness. This class will cover the top 10 fundamental oils and their uses. Students will take home their own essential oil blend. Tuition: $10 plus $5 material fee paid to instructor at first class.

Grow Your Own Organic Garden: 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 5. This workshop will discuss how to grow vegetables organically in a sustainable manner. Participants can take home free seeds. All are welcome, from first-timers to experienced gardeners who want to experiment with new techniques. Tuition: $10.

Stamp Making FUN!: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, April 6 and 13, at Leavitt Area High School. Those interested in scrapbooking or learning how to make their own cards or cut tags will learn to cut stamps from linoleum and other materials and make several pieces to take home. Tuition: $25. 

Intro to Self Employment: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 6. The pros and cons of owning a business will be covered as well as the steps needed for start-up, elements of a business plan and resources available to help a business succeed. Preregistration is required. Tuition: Free.

Backyard Chicken Ranching: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8. This class starts with the idea of owning and raising chickens and takes participants through the bird-selection process. Topics will include preparing for the first flock, protecting them from predators and illness and watching the flock multiply. Tuition: $45 plus $10 material fee paid to instructor at class.

Felting Soap, April 8, 10 a.m. to noon. Learn how to prepare and felt soap using wet felting techniques that can also be used to make other 3-D felted objects. Students will leave with several handmade felted soaps. Material fee of $10 paid to instructor at class. Cost: $15. 

Plants Are Best!: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8. Discover the benefits of eating whole plant-based foods to reverse chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Enjoy cooking demonstrations with tasting, and meal ideas and recipes to change your life. Tuition: $25 plus $15 material fee to be paid to instructor at class.
