Several college athletes with local ties received conference accolades for their performances last week.

Edward Little High School alumnus Connor Harris and Lewiston High School graduate Adela Kalilwa were both honored by the Little East Conference.

Harris, a senior on the University of Southern Maine track and field team, was named the men’s field athlete of the week after finishing second in the high jump, long jump and triple jump at the season-opening Snowflake Classic hosted by Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

Harris’ marks in all three events (6 feet, 4 inches in high jump; 21-0 in long jump; and 45-9.75 in triple jump) qualify him for the New England Division III Championships next month. His triple jump distance ranks 15th nationally in Division III.

Harris accounted for 24 of the Huskies’ 61 points at the meet. They finished fourth.

This is the third time Harris has been chosen as the Little East field athlete of the week. He received the honor twice last April in what was his first season at Southern Maine.

Kalilwa, a freshman at Southern Maine, was named the Little East women’s rookie field athlete of the week for the second consecutive week.

Kalilwa’s college career is off to a nice start after winning the Class A state championship in the long jump and placing second in the triple jump during her senior season at Lewiston.

Kalilwa set a University of Southern Maine record in the triple jump, 37-7.5, to place third at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Spike Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Saturday. That mark ranks fourth in the nation and qualifies Kalilwa for the New England Division III Championships as well as the NEICAAA New England Championships.

On Friday, her season-best long jump (17-7) placed fourth at the Spike Classic.

Bickford blocks Vikings, Leopards

University of Maine at Farmington freshman goalie Samantha Bickford, a former Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School standout, was named the North Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse defensive player of the week.

Bickford earned two wins for the Beavers last week. She made 12 saves in a 14-11 victory over Salem State, and eight saves in a 10-9 triumph over Wentworth.

Bickford has started all four games this season for the 3-1 Beavers, and has made 41 saves.

The beginning of something fast

Fresh out of Poland Regional High School, Leah Desjardins has sprinted out to a fast start to her college career at Husson University. Her speed has garnered her the North Atlantic Conference women’s track and field rookie of the week.

At the Occidental College Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic in March, which featured more than 30 teams, Desjardins finished 10th in the 100-meter dash. Her time of 12.81 seconds set a Husson record and made her the first Husson qualifier for the New England Championships in the 100.

Fakorede throws down

Bates College junior Adedire Fakorede has been picked as the NESCAC field performer of the week.

At the first meet of the season for the Bates men’s outdoor track and field team at the University of Maine, Fakorede placed first in the discus by a large margin. His throw of 157-8 was nearly 17 feet farther than that of second-place Adam Lufkin of UMaine.

Fakorede (Newark, New Jersey) also finished second in the shot put (49-9) and fourth in the hammer throw (161-10).

Fakorede’s throwing prowess helped the Bobcats finish in a tie for first with host UMaine, and far ahead of third-place New Hampshire.

The Bates women placed a close second to UMaine. That meet featured a third-place finish in the 200 (27.44 seconds) by former Edward Little High School standout Anna Beaudet, who is a freshman at Bates.

Del Gallo pins down honors

University of Southern Maine senior Dan Del Gallo, who hails from Gardiner, was picked as the Pilgrim Wrestling League wrestler of the year.

It is the latest addition to Del Gallo’s honor roll after he claimed the NCAA Division III championship in the 149-pound weight class. He also was named the New England Wrestling Association’s wrestler of the year.

His brother, Peter Del Gallo, a freshman at Southern Maine, was named the co-rookie of the year by the New England Wrestling Association.

Harris wins

Lewiston High School graduate Isaiah Harris, a sophomore at Penn State, took first in his outdoor season debut at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Harris won the 800-meter run by posting the third-fastest time in Penn State history (1:45.64).
