LISBON — The Lisbon Police Department and the Lisbon School District are addressing the concerns that were raised Friday morning regarding student safety at Sugg Middle School and Lisbon High School.
Lisbon Police say earlier in the week there was a rumor that a “school shooting would take place either Friday or Friday, April 14.”
The rumor started when one student reportedly told another student that the threat had been written on a bathroom wall at the high school, according to police.
Police say all rooms at the high school were checked and no evidence of threats was found.
Police say school administrators spoke with numerous students, but no credible evidence was found that there was a threat towards students or staff.
“It is important to note that school officials and the Lisbon Police Department were working together throughout this investigation,” Lisbon Police wrote on Facebook.
On Thursday, after students had been dismissed for the day, a staff member at the Sugg Middle School found a threatening message written on a desk, according to police.
The Lisbon Police Department was contacted and an investigation began into the reported threat.
Police say there was no legitimate threat to students or staff.
“It was determined, however, that the Lisbon Police Department would post an officer at each school on Friday morning, to alleviate any fears or concerns that parents, staff, or students may have,” Lisbon Police wrote.
Police say at the start of the school day on Friday, the incident at the middle school was investigated and a student admitted to writing the message on the desk.
The alleged incident at the Lisbon High School continues to be investigated, but there is no credible evidence of a threat, according to police.
Police say had there been evidence of a threat, a system wide notification would have been implemented.
“The Lisbon Police Department would like people to know that we appreciate the many positive aspects of social media. In fact, we are using one such positive aspect at this time, which is the opportunity to clarify rumors and inaccuracies that have cause a great deal of concern within our community,” Lisbon Police wrote.
Police say the schools were not placed into a lockdown and a student did not show up at the high school with a weapon.
