STRONG — Clarance Nutting of Strong was recently awarded the District Award of Merit for Kennebec Valley District for Boy Scout of America, after being nominated by Chuck Smith of Strong. This award is given to adult Scouts who provide great service.

Nutting has been involved in Scouting for many years. When his grandson joined Scouts, he jumped in to help. When the boy and his family moved to Augusta, he made the weekly trip from Strong to Augusta, and even became Scoutmaster, to make sure the program flourished.

When the state granted Nutting and his wife custody of his grandsons, he returned to the Strong troop, where he has held several positions. He has been the Cubmaster of the pack for several years, while continuing to be part of Troop 500’s committee. He eventually became Scoutmaster. He is currently the advancement officer for the troop.

Nutting is always available to work with Scouts. He was the guide for a recent Eagle project that involved building bridges across small streams. He also served as Cubmaster for the pack in Strong and helped build the trailer needed for the troop equipment. 

He has continued to assist with the camporees, the Bomazeen Old Timers and Camp Bomazeen, even after his grandson left the program.
