PORTLAND — Irene M. Maheux, 84, formerly of Lewiston, passed away Sunday, April 9, surrounded by her loving family. She was a strong woman and fought for her life until her last breath. She will now be welcomed home by our Heavenly Father.

Born in Chisholm on Aug. 5, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Napoleon and Anna (Wiseman) Couture.

She was the daughter-in-law of the late Alfred and Desneiges (Fortin) Maheux and the sister of the late Jane Pomerleau and her husband, George, Loretta Labbe, Rita Fecteau and her husband, Gerard, Jeanette Ouellette and her husband, Leo, and Jacqueline Franco. She is also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Roland Maheux, and his wife, Patricia, and her son-in-law, Luis Alexander Cordoba.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Roger B. Maheux of Brunswick (formerly of Lewiston); her children, Arlene Simpson and her husband, Robert, of Brunswick, Sandra Certo and her husband, Franco, of Scarborough, Suzanne Cordoba of Gray, and Michael Maheux of Lewiston. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Angela Belmonte, Jason Richardson, Jessica Godin, Desiree Cordoba, Ian Simpson and his wife, Jennifer, Krystal Cordoba, Ashley English and her husband, Christopher, Alexandria Veinott and her husband, Chance, and Samantha Miles and her husband, Robert III. In addition, she was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren whom she adored, N’neka Hull, Kayani Hull, Mia Belmonte, Skyloh Godin, Zoe Simpson, Chloe Veinott, Eli Veinott, Robert Miles IV, Natalie Miles, Samuel Richardson, Alexis Simpson and Calvin Miles; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. In her earlier years, she enjoyed dancing, camping, bowling and attending the Knights of Columbus balls. She also enjoyed playing bingo, cards, going to casinos, attending plays, watching her soaps, catching up on the phone with family and friends, shopping, decorating and simply enjoying life. Irene will be remembered for her unrelenting faith in God, her unconditional love for all and her beautiful soul. She will be dearly missed.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Maine Medical Center who comforted and supported her in her final days.
