OTISFIELD — The Otisfield Historical Society is offering a program geared to those who have ever wanted to find out how old their house is, or what property their ancestors might have owned when they died. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, after a short business meeting, at the Otisfield Community Hall on Route 121.

Pat Shearman, Oxford County Register of Deeds, and Jennifer Dilworth, Register of Probate, will be on hand and take turns explaining how to delve into the county records via computer.

As Shearman will explain, finding the past owners of any property involves a complicated search through the county land records in an organized way, from present to past, uncovering all the previous owners. Searching through probate records to find an ancestor’s estate papers is a similar process, which often reveals new details about individuals who died in Oxford County.

This program will be the first of four public programs to be presented by the Historical Society in 2017. All are free and open to the public. Anyone interested in genealogical research is encouraged to attend.
