100 years ago, 1917
On Thursday the Journal told how Dr. J. A Donovan had received from the secretary of the Albany Medical College Alumni association a query concerning William Herrick and Nathaniel Jenkins, who once lived in Lewiston. Dr. Donovan had made diligent inquiry among the older physicians but none could remember. Bright and early Friday morning Lew L. Haskell of Park Street, Lewiston, brought to the Journal office, a faded, yellow copy of the Lewiston-Auburn directory of 1860; and on the top of one of the pages appeared this entry: “Herrick, William B., Physician, House near Main street.” It was before the days of street numbers. This establishes that a Dr. Herrick once lived and practiced here — and not so long ago but that somebody, it would seem, ought to remember him.

50 years ago, 1967
Boys of Cub Scout age and circuses are a perfect combination and this idea was proven last night by Scouts of Pack 111 as they presented “The Circus” at the First Universalist Church in Auburn. Working under the supervision of the Cubmaster Edward Varney, the various dens made costumes, games and other things necessary for the event. A big parade, with Den Five as the circus band, opened the activities and a reading entitled “Our Circus” was presented by L. Damon Scales. Den Four presented a skit, “The Lion Tamer.”

25 years ago, 1992
Words came off the page and some words went back on the page as the 215 children at the Lake Street School in Auburn participated in Young Authors Day, the fourth year the school has held the event. Children in kindergarten through third grade listened to two published authors, read what they had written themselves, wrote plays and stories, made dioramas illustrating scenes from books and put on puppet shows throughout the day, said third-grade teacher Susan Trask. “It’s to aspire them to greater heights,” she said.
