The first Bates College contingent to be called for military service left Lewiston late Monday for the Charlestown navy yard, where its members will receive three months’ training in preparation for actual work in the coast patrol service.

50 years ago, 1967
Surveys on French studies offered in both public and parochial schools of Maine will feature the study session during the eighth annual biannual congress of the Franco American Feminine Federation, to he held Saturday, May 6 at Holiday Inn, Auburn. The survey was made by Miss Laurianna Boucher, coordinator of all foreign language studies at Lewiston High School, and by Mrs. Antoin E. Mamente of Auburn, a past president of the Federation who has done tutoring in French, which is her native language.

25 years ago, 1992
There are a few key things to keep in mind Saturday, the day of the Maine State Parade. You may have trouble traveling over the Androscoggin River. The Longley Bridge, part of the parade route, will be closed between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and the Veterans Memorial Bridge, because of a construction project, is down to one lane in each direction. There’s also a change in the access route to Central Maine Medical Center. Because the Bridge Street Bridge is closed, the route organizers used last year is not available. The three-hour parade, with some 175 units, will wind its way down Main Street onto the Longley Bridge, turn onto Turner Street in Auburn and disband at Great Falls Plaza.
