CANTON — The Canton ball field was a lively place on Saturday, thanks to the Spring Fling event hosted by Canton Recreation.

Accompanying the many children and adults were several dogs, brought by their owners to compete in a trick and costume competition.

Jason Lee and his young black Labrador retriever, Veera, won the trick competition by demonstrating Veera’s impressive knowledge of distinguishing her left paw from her right. The demonstration wrapped up as Veera fell to the ground with comedic drama when Lee pointed a finger at her and said, “Bang!”

Krista McLean and her dog, Macy, won the costume contest with Macy’s adorable lion suit. Jordan Hutchins and Toby, also known as Mallory LeBlanc, took home the prize for the owner look-a-like contest.

Spencer Vaughan, 19, brought along his race car to the event. Vaughan has been racing since he was 5, and now competes at Wiscasset Speedway with his custom-built, four-cylinder pro-stock, owned by Dayl Kaulback and sponsored by Hutchins Custom Woodworking.

Other activities included the Kerplunk game, blowing bubbles with string, kickball and a three-legged race. The Pirates Galley served hamburgers and hot dogs.

Event organizer Phyllis Desjardins Ouellette said she’s not sure if it will become an annual event, but she’s open to the idea.

“If people like it and want us to do it again, we’ll do it again,” she said.
