PORTLAND (AP) — Officials say a taxi driver survived a stabbing outside a Portland, Maine, strip club but had to be taken to a Boston hospital because of the extent of his injuries.

Police say the 60-year-old driver put his hand up to protect himself as 30-year-old Justin Kristiansen stabbed him in the neck after arriving in the PT Showclub parking lot early Friday. Police Lt. Robert Martin said club staff and bystanders intervened to provide aid.

The victim suffered injuries on his neck and hand, and the cab company’s owner told WGME-TV he needed surgery to reattach some fingers.

Kristiansen was charged with elevated aggravated assault and was held at the Cumberland County Jail pending an initial court appearance Monday. It was unknown if he had a lawyer, and his phone rang unanswered.
