FARMINGTON — The fiddleheads are up and the Maine Fiddlehead Festival will be held Saturday, rain or shine.

The sixth annual festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 6 on the grounds of the Emery Community Arts Center at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Organizer Cynthia Stancioff said the center has space to accommodate all displays. Demonstrations and talks will be held under a large tent. If it is necessary to move inside, food trucks will be moved closer to the arts center.

The Saturday Farmington Farmers Market will also be set up.

The festival will feature acoustic music, baby farm animals, antique tractors, local food vendors and farmers, gourmet fiddlehead cooking demonstrations, and “tent talks” on various foraging and homesteading topics.

A fiddlehead “walk and talk” will be offered. Other presentations will include seed-saving, making acorn flour and bread, cooking with cannabis, making pita bread and urban foraging.

The theme is “Seeds and Breeds: Preserving Food Diversity.” Local and international efforts to save heirloom seeds and to propagate heirloom breeds will be highlighted.

The documentary, “SEED: The Untold Story,” will be shown at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Lincoln Auditorium at UMF. Showcasing efforts around the world to preserve crop diversity, the film features renowned seed-saver and homesteader Will Bonsall of Industry who will introduce the film and answer questions after the showing.
