NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Major League Baseball Players Trust has announced that four Maine high school student volunteers are being honored with $2,000 college scholarships to celebrate their dedication to community service.

The scholarships have been awarded in honor of National Volunteer Week.

Allison Emery from Poland Regional High School, Stephen Backman and Aaron Carlton from Brunswick High School and Elizabeth Roy from Thornton Academy in Saco are among 20 Action Team captains being recognized nationally.

All scholarship recipients are members of the Action Team national youth volunteer program, created and administered by the Major League Baseball Players Trust and Volunteers of America.

The awards are based on volunteer activities, academic achievements and leadership skills of high school students serving as Action Team captains. As captains, each of the scholarship recipients takes on the responsibility of planning and organizing Action Team-centric volunteer events in and around their schools, while encouraging others to get involved in their communities.

This is the 10th year the Players Trust has awarded college scholarships to recognize the efforts of Action Team captains.

Each scholarship application was reviewed by a committee comprised of representatives of the Major League Baseball Players Trust and Volunteers of America, and included Major Leaguers Mark Melancon of the San Francisco Giants and Craig Stammen of the San Diego Padres.

Action Team captains receive free posters and T-shirts to help support their efforts. They are also invited to attend regional Action Team service projects, featuring Major Leaguers and, in recognition of their efforts and accomplishments, will receive free tickets to Major League baseball games and certificates of achievement signed by Major Leaguers, near the end of the school year.

Through the Players Trust, Major Leaguers contribute their time, money and celebrity to call attention to causes affecting the needy and to help encourage others to get involved in their own communities.
