GREENWOOD — Residents at the annual town meeting in Greenwood on Saturday voted to ban retail marijuana establishments and social clubs, approved almost all money articles and re-elected both constituents for the Board of Selectmen and the school board.

Approved was the self-governing ordinance on food sales, so food at events can be sold directly to customers without a license.

Voters turned down the idea of requesting $5,000 from the regional Heart & Soul project, an information and story-gathering effort among area towns intended to aid in future community decisions. It was included under the Codes/Planning/Assessing budget, which totals $47,456, and was recommended by selectmen, but not the Budget Committee.

Money articles voters approved included:

• $120,000 for the Fire and Rescue Department;

• $371,600 for the Highway Department;

• $65,000 for the G & W Transfer and Recycle Station;

• $267,330 for Administration and Salaries; and

• $158,333 for Debt Service.

The total municipal budget is approximately $1.20 million, compared to $1.18 million last year. 

Town Clerk Kimberly Sparks said if an estimate on school costs is correct, the tax rate will increase from $12.40 to $12.90.

“These will all change once the revaluation is complete and the tax bills go out,” she said.

Larry Merlino beat Amy Scott for his seat on the School Administrative District 44 school board, and Arnie Jordan, running unopposed, kept his seat on the Board of Selectmen.

Voters also approved an article that will terminate of the agreement for the Oxford County Regional Recycling Corp. Because many member towns now do single-sort recycling, the organization is no longer needed, officials have said.
