FARMINGTON — A Jay man accused of stealing 50 gallons of maple syrup in February from his former employer on More Acres Road in Wilton was indicted Thursday.

Brandon Hall, 24, was indicted on felony charges of burglary, which is elevated because of prior offenses, and theft by unauthorized taking.

Police recovered 17 of the containers of maple syrup, Wilton Police Chief Heidi Wilcox said previously. Other property belonging to the Wilton sap house was found when police searched Hall’s residence.

Hall was in jail on other theft charges when officer Ethan Kyes arrested him on the maple syrup charges.

A conviction on a Class B burglary charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. A conviction on the Class C theft charge carries a maximum five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

As part of his investigation, Kyes talked with former employees. Hall had left the business on poor terms, Wilcox said in February. Apparently, Hall gave some of the maple syrup to friends, she said then.

Wilton police were called Feb. 18 to investigate after it was believed someone had forced their way into the building.
