AUBURN — Ups are high and downs are low for the Lewiston boys’ lacrosse team this season.

In Tuesday’s 16-8 win over rival Edward Little at Walton Field, the Blue Devils’ ups came in the second and third quarters when they racked up 12 goals.

“We just kind of get on some rolls, and once one good thing happens, it’s like a domino effect, a bunch of good things start happening,” Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said.

“Unfortunately, the flip side is also true: a bad thing starts happening, and multiple bad things start happening. We want to play a more consistent good game all the way through, instead of having those mental lapses.”

Roman Dennis scored in the opening minute Tuesday to give Lewiston a quick 1-0 lead. The score stayed there until about a minute into the second quarter when Edward Little’s Tyler Morin scored to tie the game.

Then the Blue Devils took over.

Alex Rivet scored 34 seconds after Morin’s equalizer, and Dennis won the ensuing faceoff and scored his second goal eight seconds later to make it 3-1.

Gunnar Wade added three goals in the final five minutes of the half to push the lead to 6-1 at the break.

“We kept them close in the first quarter, played a great first quarter,” Edward Little coach Jim Dock said. “They just pulled away in the second. Little mistakes — dropping the ball, not catching, not getting after the ground balls — all those little issues add up to problems.”

The Blue Devils continued to rack up goals in bursts after halftime.

First, Rivet scored twice in less than a minute to make it 8-1 with 8:56 remaining in the third.

“We stuck to our systems,” Rivet said. “Playing our systems is definitely key, slowing the ball down instead rushing it all the time.”

Four minutes later, Jayden Wilson scored twice in 50 seconds. Rivet had another goal four seconds later, and Garrett Poussard put one in 32 seconds after that.

Finally, Edward Little’s Eli McBride ended Lewiston’s streak of 11 unanswered goals with 55 seconds remaining, but Wade made it 13-2 with four seconds left in the third.

The Blue Devils didn’t exactly cruise through the fourth quarter — or maybe they cruised too much.

The Red Eddies opened the fourth with a barrage of their own, scoring four goals — two by Ben Feldman and one each by McBride and Ganan Mancini — in less than two minutes, cutting the deficit to 13-6 with 8:10 left in the game.

“I think we just kind of realized that we had nothing else to play for, let’s just go out and have fun here, put some balls in the back of the net,” Dock said. “And, obviously, some of our players started feeling it a little bit more in the fourth quarter.”

Four minutes later, Wilson kept the comeback threat from becoming too serious by burying his third and fourth goals within 46 seconds of each other.

Feldman added another goal, his third of the quarter, and Alex Landry added another for Edward Little to make it 16-8 with 1:23 to play.

“I think a little bit of a mental lapse (by Lewiston),” Fournier said, “and, Edward Little, they didn’t stop fighting, they went at it all game hard. So our guys thought that, you know, they could take it easy and coast to a win, but EL, they didn’t roll over. So they popped in a few and made us pay for it.”

Rivet wrapped up the scoring with his fifth goal 10 seconds later. He also had two assists. Wade and Wilson each contributed four goals and four assists.

“When (those three) start feeling it, and when they start feeling their shots and finding their spaces, then good things start to happen,” Fournier said.

The Blue Devils (7-4) maintain their grip on second place in the Class A North Heal point standings. They finish the regular season next Tuesday at home against Mt. Ararat (5-4).

“We got to take every game from now on like a playoff game,” Rivet said, “because in a couple weeks, we’re going to be in a playoff game, and if we have a bad game, it could be our last game. So it’s like a do-or-die situation.”

The Red Eddies (5-5) are in sixth place, but sit comfortably in postseason position. They close out the regular season with two road games, at Oxford Hills (0-9) on Thursday and at MCI/Nokomis (4-5) next Tuesday.
