SOUTH PARIS — Anyone walking down Main Street Saturday could enjoy the aroma and beauty of lilacs, thanks to the annual Lilac Festival at McLaughlin Gardens and Homestead in South Paris.

This year was particularly special, Director Donna Anderson said, because it is the 20th year McLaughlin Garden and Homestead has been open, and a birthday party was planned for Saturday night to celebrate.

Anderson said she and the staff of McLaughlin Garden would honor founders, supporters and advisers of the previous 20 years at the conservancy’s birthday party. She and the staff also would reveal the master plan for McLaughlin Garden’s next 20 years.

Those who attended the festival could purchase flowers, participate in a scavenger hunt, visit the gift shop and take a tour of the garden.

Attendees could also sit in on the lilac care discussion and learn how to care for the fragrant blooms.
