LEWISTON — Monique D. Bernier, 85, of Lewiston died peacefully on Sunday, June 4, at her residence with her loving family by her side.

She was born in Lewiston on Sept. 23, 1931, the daughter of the late Alfred and Rose (Verreault) Plourde and had been a resident of this community all of her life. She was educated at Mt. Merici Academy in Waterville and graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1949. She then continued on and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1952.

She was employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary’s Regional Hospital. In 1992, she had received the Outstanding Achievement Award on behalf of the National Behavioral System in California. Monique retired in 1995 at St. Mary’s as a nurse manager for the Chemical Dependency Unit.

Monique had a love for animals, especially dogs. She enjoyed spending time at her summer cottage on Sabattus Lake.

She is survived by her husband, Henry R. Bernier Jr., whom she married on Sept. 21, 1955, of Lewiston; two daughters, Denise Bowie and her husband, Michael, of Lisbon Falls and Renee Bernier of Lewiston; her only grandson, Nicholas Benoit of Lewiston; and a niece and nephew, Julie Plourde of Tampa, Fla., and David Plourde of Lewiston.

She was predeceased by her brother, Alfred A. Plourde, who died on March 12, 1990.
