Drivers traveling through Old Town may want to plan on longer travel times between now and roughly the end of the month.

As of Tuesday, Center Street was being closed to all through traffic at both ends for the ongoing sewer upgrade project. Daytime closures for Center Street will continue every day at 6 a.m, for upwards of the next three weeks. Center Street will reopen for all thru traffic, when construction ends each day.

During the day traffic coming south down Stillwater Avenue toward the downtown will be diverted down Stillwater Avenue where it intersects with Center Street. Traffic coming from Milford will be able to go either go left to Rte. 2 towards Orono, or by taking a right off the bridge at either Main or Water Streets, and go toward Gilman Falls Avenue to get to Stillwater Avenue. All Interstate 95 traffic going north or south should take Gilman Falls Avenue to access I95.

Local traffic will be able to access their homes and businesses, and an attempt is being made to minimize disruptions as best as possible; at the same time, the scope of work means disruptions will happen, and delays are likely. The traveling public is urged to seek alternate routes,

Signage will be posted offering suggestions to reduce any potential added commute time. Flaggers will be present at each end of the project. Should you have any question regarding access to your destination on Center Street, please ask the flagger(s)

Jefferson Street to Oak Street will be open during construction each day. Buses and parents can use Jefferson Street, Perkins Street or 6th Street to gain access to Oak Street, which leads to the Leonard Middle School. Buses can still access from the back of Middle School as they are currently are.

The Center Street work will be running at the same time as roadwork that currently is taking place on Main Road in Milford. That latter project already has caused numerous travel snarls, meaning the Center Street project will firther slow driving for some motorists.
