NEW GLOUCESTER — On Saturday, June 24, Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village  will offer a series of traditional craft workshops. Traditional craft workshops (pre-registration required for workshops at www.maineshakers.com or call 207-926-4597) include “Penny Rugs in the Shaker Spirit” where participants will learn to make penny rugs with wool-on-wool applique with traditional rug-maker Rose Ann Hunter. In the early 1800s thrifty people would recycle and repurpose worn textiles into folk art designs to create bed coverings, table mats and mantle pieces for colorful adornments. Most designs were made of layers of circles of wool traced from coins, hence the “penny rug.” $70

Create an “Herbal Pantry” with this workshop. Using herbs grown in the Shakers’ historic gardens, participants will learn how to make seasonings from fresh and dried herbs. Master gardener Betsey Golon will explain how to make and take home herbal salt, herbal pepper, herbal-infused oil, herbal-infused vinegar, herbal mustard, herbal sugar and a custom no-salt herb blend. There is a morning session and afternoon session $40

In “Gel Printmaking: Print the Shaker Gardens” instructor and artist Bonnie Faulkner, owner of Heron Point Gallery in Portland, will teach how to create prints without a press using botanicals from the Shaker herb garden. It’s simple, versatile and addictive. This workshop is well suited for professional or novice printmakers, craft enthusiasts or anyone with a desire to try it. $55

The Shaker Store and the Shaker Museum Visitors’ Center will be open as well. Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is located at 707 Shaker Road (Route 26).
