PERU — Katelyn “Kit-Kat” Carlow of Peru planted 1,288 flowers on veterans’ graves in cemeteries in 18 Western Maine communities with the help of her family and other volunteers during Memorial Day weekend.
Cemeteries in Peru, Dixfield, Rumford, Mexico, Bethel, Andover, Canton, Carthage, Wilton, East Dixfield, Farmington, Chesterville, East Mercer, Norridgewock, Pittsfield, Hartland, St. Albans, and Canaan were the beneficiaries of the teen’s and her volunteers’ caring work.
Carlow said she read many of the veterans’ gravestones and noted citizens who were a nurse from World War II; a Navy ship cook; in the Spanish-American War; the Korean War; the Revolutionary War; World War I; Vietnam; the Civil War; in the Army; the Air Force; and the Marines.
As the group planted the flowers they also took the time to talk to other people visiting their loved ones’ gravesites and they listened to the stories about those who had passed on, she said.
Carlow was sad to see that many of the cemeteries in her hometown Peru were not well maintained and she thinks that she would like to become a member of the town’s cemetery committee in the future.
