Carter Austin, 7, of Sabattus hands Vietnam veteran Jim Merrill of Auburn the final piece of the American flag during a cutting and identification of the flag stripes at Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston on Monday evening. Austin, a third-grade student at Carrie Ricker School in Litchfield, Bryson Dubuc, right, and their classmates helped during the Lewiston-Auburn Liberty Festival’s Salute to the American Flag and Retirement Ceremony. Merrill retired from the U.S. Air Force and is a 2nd lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol. The Liberty Festival continues at 6 p.m. Tuesday with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
