A Harley-Davidson motorcycle lies on Pleasant Street in Lewiston after a collision with a minivan Thursday night. Police were searching for a man and a woman seen running from the bike, which police said is registered to a man who lives in Wales.

LEWISTON ?— Police were searching for a motorcycle driver and his passenger Thursday night after the pair fled after a crash on Pleasant Street.

Witnesses said the man and woman took off running into a backyard and toward Webster Street after the bike collided with a minivan at about 9:30 p.m.

Left behind at the scene of the crash was a badly damaged Harley Davidson, a lone shoe, a baseball cap, a pair of eyeglasses and a pack of cigarettes.

Daniel Pelletier, of Lewiston, said he was driving on Pleasant Street, toward the downtown, two children in the back seat, when the motorcycle rider sped toward his minivan from Dill Street.

‘I could see him out of the corner of my eye,’ Pelletier said. ‘It didn’t look like he even tried to stop.’

The Harley slammed into the drivers side of Pelletier’s Dodge Caravan, shattering a rear window.

‘It went boom!’ said Cayleb, Pelletier’s 7-year-old son, who was sitting near the point of impact.

Neither Cayleb or his sister Myia, 4, were hurt, although Pelletier said both kids were shaken up.

‘It shattered that window and sent glass flying across the seat,’ he said.

Neighbors reported that the Harley rider had been traveling at perhaps 70 mph coming off Dill Street. After crashing, one man said, the rider made a brief attempt to lift his bike before dashing off into the backyard.

The man, missing a shoe, was hobbling as he fled, witnesses said.

One woman who lives in the area said her security light came on shortly after the crash.

Police and firefighters searched several areas around nearby yards but the rider was not found. Later Thursday night, police were still searching the neighborhood.

The motorcycle, police said, came back to a man who lives in Wales.

Police also checked with both city hospitals to see if the couple had come in with injuries suffered in the wreck.

Pelletier’s minivan, with a long piece of the frame hanging from the underside and a door that would not close, had to be towed from the scene.
