DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is accepting nominations for the 2017 Outdoor Achievement Award until 5 p.m. Aug. 7.
Hunting, fishing and trapping are an important part of Maine’s heritage. This award celebrates the achievements of an individual and shares their experiences for the benefit of future generations.
The department is seeking nominations of individuals who have hunted, trapped and fished in Maine for a combined total of 40 years. For example, an individual who has fished for 20 years, trapped for 10 years, and hunted for 10 years; or fished for 30 years and hunted for 10 years is an ideal candidate. Candidates should also demonstrate a history of mentoring, teaching, or instructing outdoor activities.
Nominations should include the person’s name, address, phone number, photograph, and a few paragraphs about the individual as well as their experience in the Maine outdoors, and an explanation of why they are a deserving candidate.
The nominator’s contact information should also be included.
Nominations can be sent by email to Bonnie Holding at [email protected] or by mail to 284 State St., SHS 41, Augusta, ME 04333. If preferred, a nomination form can be downloaded from http://www.maine.gov/ifw/pdfs/lifetimeoutdoorachievementaward.pdf
The recipient(s) of this year’s Lifetime Outdoor Achievement Award will be selected by a committee of individuals from the Department and will be recognized at the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine banquet in Waterville on Sept. 9, 2017.
ANSWER: Just about everyone here in Maine has a longtime hunter, trapper, and/or fisherman in their life! This is a wonderful way to recognize them and to keep this three-year-old tradition going. Thank you for sharing this information with Sun Spots.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Years ago, I worked with Ann Kolascyk at Fancy Stitchers in Lewiston. She loaned me her book “Sybil” just before I got done working there. When I went back to return it, Ann was no longer there. I remember she had a daughter and that they lived in Lisbon or Lisbon Falls. I haven’t been able to find her. If anyone knows where she is, I would really like to return her book. Please contact me at 388-2667 or [email protected]. — Cyndy, Sumner
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have what appear to be two elm trees which are over 80 years old and relatively healthy. Since there are so few elm trees left, I want to know if there is anything special I can do to keep them healthy. I was going to contact the Lewiston city arborist, but I couldn’t find an email address. Any help will be appreciated. — Andrew, No Town
ANSWER: It’s very exciting that you have these trees! Steve Murch, the city arborist, can be contacted at [email protected] or give him a call at 513-3003, ext. 3443. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service may also be able to assist you. Direct your questions to [email protected].
