At the next meeting of the Lewiston City Government it is expected that an order will be introduced for the payment of all patrolmen who have been on duty since the beginning of the controversy over the make-up and control of the department. The men need the money, as they have now been over two months (some of them at least) without any pay. One or two of the policemen are property owners, but the majority say that bills have been piling up. The payrolls, now aggregating several thousand dollars, are in the hands of City Treasurer Hale, who won’t pay any of them without further authority.

Between them is a photo of the B-25C which Stewart, as crew chief, named the Silver Slipper, and in which Meere flew 55 of his 65 combat missions. Bidders were interested in the former home of Eith’s Bakery at an auction Saturday, but no one wanted to bid more than $31,000. Five bidders registered for the auction, but were not interested in paying a high price, so the building was not sold by Mid Maine Savings Bank, said Joseph P. Maloney, auctioneer and a real estate broker. The land at 21 Hampshire St. has been assessed at $68,900 and the building itself, which contains three apartments, had a 1990 assessment of $134,000, according to records in the Auburn tax assessor’s office. Maloney said he has received several calls over the weekend and believes there may be a buyer for the building in the next week. There are no plans for another auction.
