PHILLIPS — The 60th Old Home Days celebration will begin Saturday, Aug. 12, and with activities for all ages.

Friendly competitions include bathtub, bike, rubber ducky and running races. Amateur lumberjacks, artists, photographers and poker players will have opportunities to show their skills throughout the week.

Winona Davenport has scheduled four golf scrambles at Justafield on Route 4, with the first tee time at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The flower show can be viewed at the Shadagee Apartments’ Community Room, and the library and the community center will host art exhibits.

The American Legion will host a cribbage tournament at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16. The North Franklin Sportsmen’s Club will host a barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17.

On Friday, Aug. 17, at 5 p.m., the grand parade starts down Main Street. This year’s theme is My Favorite Fairy Tale, and judges will award prizes based on creativity and originality.

From 1 to 6 p.m., Suzy Sanders’ 11th magical kingdom of Wonderland will include tours of tiny faerie houses, face-painting by local artists, puppet shows and hands-on crafts.

Next door, volunteers will serve the annual chicken barbecue supper at the Community House on Main Street. Diners can eat at picnic tables while they watch the parade. On Friday, Aug. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m., Fault Line will play classic rock and blues at the popular street dance.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, the Phillips Public Library will host a road race for children up to age 17.

The Sandy River Flying Club will host a breakfast from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Lindbergh Airport on Route 4. The club also will offer plane rides throughout the day.

There will be a children’s parade on Main Street at 11 a.m. on Aug. 20, beginning on Main Street. In the event of rain, participants can gather in the Phillips Area Community Center.

The Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad Museum will offer hourly train rides throughout the week at Dill Woods. The railroad also will be the site of a Confederate encampment, and on Saturday, Aug. 19, the Union and Rebel forces will stage a mock face-off around the train, with flags flying and guns at the ready. The museum volunteers also will offer serene evening rides in lantern-illuminated coaches. Check the SR&RLR Facebook site for updates.

Registrations will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, for competitions at the Northwoods Pulling Track.

There will be a horseshoe tournament at 1 p.m. at North Franklin Park. Participants will launch their ducks at 1 p.m. from the town bridge, capping another year of Old Home Days festivities.

This year’s honored couple is Sylvia and Bert Lambert, selected for their lengthy and dedicated service to the community. Guy “Sonny” Haines is the honored lumberman of the year.
