CANTON — The Rev. Glendon E. Gammon, 90, of Auburn Road, Peru, was promoted to Heaven, Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Pinnacle Health and Rehab, Canton.
He was born in Peru on Aug. 30, 1926, the son of Hollis “Stuart” and Jennie (Gordon) Gammon, graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1944 and the Providence Bible Institute in Providence, R.I., in 1954. Glen served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1945 to 1946.
Most of his life, he served as a pastor in American Baptist churches until his retirement. The Rev. Gammon was a pastor at the Burnham Baptist Church in Burnham, United Baptist Church, Lee, Warren Baptist Church, Warren, First Baptist Church, Fair Haven, Vt., and Hydeville Baptist Church, Hydeville, Vt., First Baptist Church, South Berwick, Glenwood Square Baptist Church, Portland, and the Rumford United Baptist Church in Rumford. With an evangelistic heart, the Rev. Gammon’s ministry included leading numerous Vacation Bible Schools and summer youth camps.
Glen grew up on a farm, and always grew large vegetable gardens. In recent years, he drove his tractor to help raise pumpkin crops at Heritage Farm in Peru. He had a very strong work ethic and an ability to build or fix about anything. In 1965, he built “Camp Gammon” a beautiful and enduring family vacation spot on Madagascal Pond near Lee. He was also a licensed electrician, owning and operating Glen’s Electric for many years, maintaining his electrician’s license well into his 80s. Glen loved singing hymns and songs of worship, often singing solos in area churches.
He was married June 28, 1952, in Lisbon Falls to the former Marjorie Durost of Peru. Other survivors include two sons, the Rev. Stephen Gammon and wife, Helen, of Coventry, R.I., and Dr. Gary Gammon and wife, Jennifer, of Pinehurst, N.C; three daughters, Cheryl Tyler and husband, Michael, of Brunswick, Ga., Marcia Eyster and husband, Philip, of Sangerville, and Marilee Colpitts and husband, Richard, of Peru; 26 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Dr. David Gammon; and a sister, Lois Wagner.
