OAKLAND — Will Kannegieser of Minot and Joe Baker of Oxford advanced to the second day of the Match Play Invitational at Waterville Country Club on Tuesday. But only one of the Martindale Country Club members will make it to the third day.
Kannegieser and Baker will square off in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, teeing off at 8 a.m. in one of four matches that will also include Craig Chapman of Auburn.
Kannegieser, who was the runner-up at last year’s Match Play, defeated Len Cole, 6 and 5, in the round of 32, then knocked off Eric Dugas, 2-up, in the round of 16.
Baker, who finished fourth in last month’s Maine Amateur, received a bye to the round of 16 as the third seed, then had to go two extra holes to defeat Ashley Fifield and advance.
Chapman, who finished in the top 10 at the Amateur, defeated fellow Auburn native Curtis Jordan, 2 and 1, then held off a late run from 13-time Maine Amateur winner Mark Plummer to win, 3 and 1, in the round of 16. He will face Tim Desmarais in the quarterfinals at 7:40 a.m.
The other quarterfinal matchups will pit Maine Amateur champion Jack Wyman, the top seed, against Lance Bernier and Sam Grindle against Andrew Slattery.
Slattery had to play a record 47 holes over two matches on Tuesday to move on. His first-round match against Keith Patterson went 24 holes, only to follow that up with a 23-hole round of 16 match against Gavin Dugas. The 24-hole match tied the record for longest in the event’s history.
It was a long day for a number of other competitors, too. Seven of eight matches in the round of 16 went all 18 holes. A record five of those matches had to go to extra holes to decide the winner.
Wednesday’s quarterfinal winners will tee it up again in the afternoon for the semifinals. The final round will be held on Thursday.
