ORONO — The University of Maine football team has a starting quarterback, and it’s not who most expected.
UMaine head coach Joe Harasymiack named redshirt freshman Chris Ferguson as the team’s starter, the school announced Saturday. Ferguson will be under center for the Black Bears when they open the season Aug. 31 at New Hampshire.
“Chris Ferguson will be our starting quarterback,” Harasymiak said in a new release. “He has demonstrated a complete body of work throughout this preseason. We feel that Chris gives us the best opportunity to be successful. We are excited about moving forward from this as a team and focusing on UNH.”
Ferguson, who stands 6-foot-4, is from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. He beat out junior Drew Belcher, senior transfer Max Staver, a former University of Florida quarterback, and freshman Isaiah Robinson.
