With American troops approaching nearer and nearer each day to the firing line, the time is here for Americans at home to think of the comfort of their boys overseas. To help Americans at home to add to the comfort and cheer which is so much needed at the front, the Lewiston Journal has established the Lewiston Journal Tobacco fund. The Journal has completed an exceptionally liberal arrangement with the American Tobacco company, so that those who contribute will be assured that every soldier named by a contributor will receive tobacco of a value much greater than the amount contributed in each case. The tobacco is to be done up in standard packets, the contents of which sell at retail in the United States for 45 cents. The cost of the packet to the Lewiston Journal Tobacco Fund contributor will be 25 cents, the packet being delivered at the front in France to the soldier designated by the contributor.

David Beaule, a Lewiston Public Works Department employee, got a surprise this morning while picking up trash in Kennedy Park. Beaule said he was picking up paper and that when he stabbed at one large bit of litter it moved. Upon investigation, he found that it was actually a frightened chicken. He said he put the chicken under the bandstand until he could call authorities for instructions as to what to do with it.

Two juveniles quickly surrendered to police and were arrested Monday night after a state police dog cornered them inside The Station, a pawn shop at 179 High Street. Auburn police called for state police dogs after responding to an alarm and finding a broken window at the store. Trooper Frank Holcomb showed up at the scene to investigate with the dog, King. The juveniles, 16 and 17, were caught within 45 minutes of the 10:44 p.m. alarm, and each was charged with burglary. “King got ’em,” said Auburn Sgt. Daniel Blanchard after the arrests. “They were yelling, ‘We give up! We give up! We give up!’ when they heard the dog,” he said.
