Prior to this year, landlords were allowed to simply check a box if nothing had changed from the previous year. Unfortunately we experienced a large number of events over the past year where we needed to contact folks on the form only to find that the information was no longer valid,” said Davie Milan, director of the town’s Office of Community Development. “We have certainly fielded many questions regarding the need to completely fill out the rental registration forms this year.
Milan said it is his intention to put the information received this year into a database so that staff can then pre-fill next year’s applications for folks when reminder letters go out in July.
“At that point they can update what needs to be updated and simply send it in,” said Milan. “I won’t be surprised if this process will need to recur every five years or so as we balance the need to have accurate information with making the process less burdensome.”
Milan added that as of the end of August, the process was about on par with previous years.
We sent out 440 letters this summer to folks who have previously registered. A little over 60 percent have submitted them to date, though we traditionally receive a bunch at the last minute,” said Milan. “I expect to receive another 10 percent before the end of this week. We usually have a hundred or so that chose to pay the double fee after September 1.”
After October 15 the town will assume that anyone that has not paid is intending to simply not register so they will be issued court summons for violating the ordinance. Last year that resulted in three summons issued, and those folks paid a fine in addition to the registration fee.
