DEAR SUN SPOTS: Where can I get a list of foods that are tax-exempt? I have looked online to no avail. Many thanks. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: I scoured the site and came up with a document titled “Maine Revenue Services, Sales Fuel & Special Tax Division, Instructional Bulletin No. 12, Retailers of Food Products.” I skimmed it and think it will answer your questions even though it doesn’t give an actual list but provides you with enough information so you can figure it out. You can find it at: Requests for information on specific situations should be in writing, contain full information as to the transaction in question, and be directed to: Maine Revenue Services, Sales, Fuel & Special Tax Division, P.O. Box 1060, Augusta, ME 04332-1060. You can also contact them at 624-9693 to ask how you can get a printed copy of the bulletin.

There’s another link where the information you’re looking for is very clearly presented: pdf. I actually like this pdf document, also put out by the Maine Revenue Services, better because it’s easier to understand.
