LEWISTON — John Wesley Hunnewell, 88, of New Gloucester, formerly of Auburn, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston.

He was born Aug. 12, 1929, a son of the late Grover and Catherine (Neal) Hunnewell. He attended school in Durham and Auburn, graduating from Edward Little High School in the Class of 1947. He entered the Army in 1950, serving two years, mostly in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1952 and returned home to Durham.

On Aug. 7, 1964, he married the love of his life, Adell Rice. Together they worked and raised their family of three children: Kathy, Belinda and Stephen. He worked at New England Counter before going to work at Gould and Scammon from where he retired.

John was a member of The Acacia Lodge of Durham. He always had a garden and raised chickens for his own use.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Adelle (Rice) Hunnewell; three children, Stephen and wife Dawn, Kathy, and Belinda and husband Carl; six grandchildren: Joshua, Tyler, Leah, Travis, Matthew and Jason; six great-grandchildren; Elysia, Wesley, Miguel, Jasmine, Jaylen and Camden; two brothers, James of Auburn and George of Windham; one sister, Beatrice (Clifford) Libby of New Gloucester; sisters-in-law, Cynthia Hunnewell of Durham, Freda Hunnewell of Auburn, Doris MacDonald of Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he is predeceased by three brothers, Lewis, Walter and Franklin Hunnewell; and a grandson-in-law, Travis Parkhurst.
