NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday to appoint Daniel Brown as a full-time police officer.
Police Chief Rob Federico said officer Brandon Correia was recently hired at Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, creating a vacancy in the department.
“We put out advertisements for the position all over the place to fill his position and we were very fortunate that we were able to receive an application from Dan,” Federico told the board. “He’s got ties to the area. He has worked full-time in Waterville, and he’s academy-certified, which is a huge bonus. He seemed to fit in well with the rest of the department, and I think he’ll be an excellent fit for Norway.”
Brown, who attended the meeting with family members, said he and his fiance used to live in the area and his mother’s family is from West Paris.
“I’m familiar with the area,” Brown said. “I worked in Norway before as a mechanic. Central Maine was just a springboard for me. I went to Thomas College, and after I graduated, I was hired in Waterville, where I worked for four years. I was always looking for an opportunity to come back here, and I’m looking forward to starting my family here.”
In other business, selectmen voted to appoint Joelle Corey-Whitman as an alternate code enforcement officer for Norway.
She is CEO for Oxford.
Town Manager Dennis Lajoie said Code Enforcement Officer Scott Tabb is working to get all of his certifications and he works with Joelle whenever he has questions.
“Scott asked me if he and Joelle could share responsibilities during vacation time so that both of our towns are covered,” Lajoie said. “This arrangement wouldn’t be used for sick days or if they take time off. It’s for planned vacation time so that they can cover each other’s territory.”
Lajoie said Oxford selectmen approved the arrangement and he had no issues with it.
Selectman Russell Newcomb said, “It would probably be a good idea to have the same agreement with Paris.”
“This has gone on for a long time, where someone was on vacation and someone from the other town would help out,” Newcomb said. “It should just be an agreement between the three towns.”
Lajoie said he was meeting with Oxford Town Manager Butch Asselin and Paris Town Manager Vic Hodgkins soon and would bring up the issue.
