The American Clothing Co., one of the largest concerns of its kind in the country, has leased the large store at 29 Lisbon street, Lewiston, formerly occupied by White & Weston and will open an up-to-date general furnishings business here in the near future. This clothing company’s system is direct from factory to consumer, and the plan inaugurated by this company years ago, has worked out very successfully. The company has for many years conducted a large retail store in Portland and has also maintained a branch store in Waterville.
50 years ago, 1967
Six prominent Twin City residents will don racing silks at Lewiston Raceway Wednesday night in a half mile United Fund exhibition race for the benefit of the United Fund. Racing on a night when all of the Raceway’s proceeds will go to the local UF campaign, the businessmen will compete in the sulky race for a “purse in reverse,” with the winner riding home free and the other entrants making donations to the UF. Raymond Geiger, a special events chairman, said the drivers in the event will be Bert Pontbriand, Bill Dumais, Roland Fortin, Al Doyon, and Maurice Goulet.
25 years ago, 1992
In an effort to ease the problem of over-crowding in the city’s elementary schools, the Lewiston School Committee Monday directed Superintendent Robert Connors to seek voluntary student transfers and investigate the possibility of establishing a sixth fifth-grade class at Montello School. Ironically, the enrollment numbers, which indicate the total number of students attending Lewiston’s seven elementary schools has dropped from 2,963 last year to 2,876 this year, also show small classroom sizes in the kindergarten at Wallace School and grade two at Martel School. “The problem is that students don’t distribute themselves equally throughout the school system,” Connors said.
