The store …The Milford Planning Board gave the green light recently to a planned Dollar General store in that town, paving the way for the possibility of two of the stores within a two-mile stretch locally.
The board approved design plans for the new Milford store at its meeting in late August. The store would be built on three small parcels beside Drinkwater Auto, near the intersection of Rtes. 2 and 178; building on those lots would be razed and removed. Another home on 178 next door to Drinkwater’s would remain.
Access to the lot would be gained on the Drinkwater’s entrance heading toward Bradley. Sound and light barriers would be installed so as to not disturb visitors to the nearby cemetery. Typical Dollar General stores run around 9,000 square feet,
According to Town Manager Chris Reardon, Dollar General indicated at the time of the hearing it hoped to break ground as soon as possible, although no groundbreaking had taken place as of this week. Once that happens, Dollar General typically opens its new stores within about 120 days, said Reardon, with the hope being to open the store before winter.
At the same time, Dollar General has announced to open a second store in the Hannaford plaza in Old Town. That store was one of more than 300 Family Dollars that Dollar General purchased earlier this year; the store has been closed since early spring, but Dollar General representatives indicated earlier this summer it will be reopened under its name.
At an Old Town planning board meeting in January, plans were announced to tear down the old Lewis Stairs School building and built a new store at that location at the corner of Main Street and Penney Road. Dollar General, however, pulled the plug on that plan.
Dollar General, which is based out of Goodlettsville, TN, has more than 13,000 convenient, stores in 43 states; it announced last summer it planned to open 1,000 new stores this year.
