AMHERST, Mass. — Ollie Eberth’s sweet touch gave Bates College a sour start to the NESCAC football season Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback led Amherst to a 41-17 lead over the Bobcats by racking up 241 totals yards (211 through the air) and four touchdown throws.

Eberth started the scoring with a 49-yard pass over the Bates defense to James O’Regan for a 6-0 Mammoths lead.

After a touchdown run by Jack Hickey, Eberth added an 18-yard scoring strike to Beau Santero, giving Amherst a 20-0 lead with 1:41 to play in the first half.

The Bobcats finally got on the board when Grant DeWald kicked a career-long 38-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Oberth added a 76-yard touchdown pass to Craig Carmilani and a 6-yarder to Bo Berluti. Amherst’s Andrew Dorogi scored on a 7-yard run later in the quarter to push the lead to 41-3.

The Bobcats reached the end zone for the first time in 2017 on Tyler Baum’s first career touchdown, a run from 3 yards out, late in the third.

Jaason Lopez scored his first college touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 41-17.

Baum led all rushers with 49 yards on four carries. Kyle Flaherty, of Oak Hill High School, carried six times for 20 yards.

Bates starting quarterback Sandy Plashkes completed 6 of 15 passes for 14 yards and threw one interception. Backup Matt Golden completed his lone pass, a 33-yarder to Brian Daly, on Lopez’s touchdown scoring drive.

The Mammoths out-gained the Bobcats 383 yards to 218. Bates gained 162 of its yards on the ground.

The Bobcats will look to regroup next Saturday when they host Trinity at 1 p.m. a part of Back to Bates weekend.
