The design by engineer Jim Sysko for a Veterans Monument to be placed at the Newry Town Office. The new stone is at the center, next to the flagpole. Town officials hope to have it placed before winter. The inscription will read: “In grateful recognition to all the men and women of Newry who have served our country in time of war and peace.”

NEWRY — Selectmen on Tuesday received a graphic design for a new Veterans Monument in front of the Town Office.

The town Cemetery Committee has been working on the plan, and the design was done by residents Bob Lowell and Jim Sysko. It will eventually include names of individuals from Newry who served in wars and conflicts, according to town officials.

The town has raised $20,000 for the project.

The placement is proposed for a grassy area between the parking lot and Route 26.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Gary Wight wondered if it might be better to locate it to one side of the building instead, to avoid road salt possibly getting on it in the winter.

Selectman Virgil “Tink” Conkright said the area might become congested if the memorial is expanded in the future. There are two rocks — one with plaques — at the site, as well as a flagpole, a tree and lilac bushes. All are included in the design. Another tree would be added.

The board agreed the site in front would be more prominent and visible.

Selectmen decided to invite Lowell to the next board meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, to discuss ideas and details.

In other business, the board signed the warrant for the districtwide vote Nov. 7 on whether to change the SAD 44 cost-sharing formula for member towns. Selectmen plan to discuss their stance on the issue at the Oct. 3 meeting.

Town Administrator Amy Bernard said the town managers and chairmen of the Boards of Selectmen in Bethel, Greenwood, Newry and Woodstock plan an administrative meeting Monday, Sept. 25, to discuss how to promote the change.

The board’s second meeting in October will be at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, instead of the usual Tuesday.
