LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectman Nixon Ortiz, vice president of Area Youth Sports, told fellow board members Tuesday night that the organization needs help with fuel costs.

“It’s getting to a point if we don’t get help, we’ll have to close completely,” he said. “That’s why we’re asking for help from the town.”

AYS uses the gym and cafeteria in the former Livermore Falls High School to store equipment and conduct sports programs for children in grades two through eight. Students from Livermore Falls, Livermore, Jay and Fayette participate in the programs.

Ortiz explained that the programs provide an opportunity for students who can’t make the middle school teams to take part in the sport of their choice. He said AYS was asking for a donation from Livermore Falls to help with fuel.

Interim Town Manager Stephen J. Gould asked if AYS could present a formal proposal detailing the exact amount being requested.

Chairman Heather Bronish asked to see the financial support AYS was getting from towns other than Livermore Falls.

“I support AYS. We just need a dollar figure,” Bronish said.

In other business, Gould said one bid was received for repair of the tennis courts at the Livermore Falls recreation field. He had received a quote of $45,241 to put down a new synthetic plastic surface.

However, the town won’t have to pay nearly that much to repair them, according to a contractor who saw them, Gould said.

“He was very impressed the court was in the shape it was in,” he said. “It looks bad, but when you start kicking the weeds out of the way, it’s pretty good.”

The contractor noted a roller could be used to smooth out the court, and it could be re-tarred and re-sealed for far less than completely replacing the surface with a different material.

One of the town’s firetrucks hit an overhead door rail at a storage barn on Karn Road, where some of the fire equipment is being stored until fire station renovations are finished. The rail is being repaired this week, Gould said.

There have been problems with rust on some of the police cruisers. Gould recommended they be put through a car wash in which the undercarriage would be cleaned to lengthen the vehicles’ life span.

One of the cruisers being used as a backup vehicle has more than 100,000 miles on it. Gould noted most towns will sell their police vehicles and get new ones once they have accumulated 100,000 miles.

He mentioned that two of the Livermore Falls police officers and one of the highway department employees had received compliments from residents for their work. Gould said he made sure to pass on the compliments, adding he was looking to create a positive work atmosphere for all town employees.

“When we encourage them, it encourages them to be more professional and better employees,” he said.

Addressing other matters, selectmen:

• Voted 4-0 to put Fire Engine No. 3 and a 200-gallon forestry tank out to bid;

• Approved a permit for the Apple Pumpkin Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Livermore Falls Recreation Field. The $25 permit fee was waived; and

• Set the next board meeting for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3.
