Veterans to host health benefits seminar

BIDDEFORD — Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1044 will host a seminar on health benefits from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at American Legion Post 26, 508 Elm St.

The seminar will focus on AARP Medicare Complete Choice Plan 1, a Medicare Advantage Plan insured by United Health Care. The plan gives access to medical care throughout the country and is the only PPO plan offered in Maine. The plan includes a prescription drug plan and has no premium costs.

Medicare Open Enrollment will begin Sunday, Oct. 15.

CMMC physician on Maine AHA board

PORTLAND — The American Heart Association in Maine has appointed several new members to its board of directors.

The AHA also announced that three Maine residents serve on the Founders Affiliate Board, which helps to drive achievement of the AHA’s public health, advocacy and fundraising goals across the six New England states, New York and New Jersey.

Newly appointed AHA Maine board members are Geoff Bruno, superintendent, Falmouth Schools; Andrew Cook, vice president, People’s United Bank; Dr. Dervilla McCann, chief of Population Health, Central Maine Medical Center; and Dr. Brandei Wingard, medical director, Southern Maine Health Care Cardiology.

Dr. John O’Meara, cardiologist with Portland Cardiology, was recently appointed the new AHA Maine board president, and Richard Veilleux, program manager at MaineHealth, is the new AHA Maine board chairman.

Introduction to Phlebotomy course set

AUBURN — The Center for Workforce & Professional Development at Central Maine Community College will offer Introduction to Phlebotomy from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 19 to Dec. 14.

A combination of lecture, lab and hands-on practical experience, the course will allow participants to develop the skills needed to work in an entry-level position as a phlebotomist. Upon completion, students may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and other health care settings.
