Lewiston fire crews put out a fire Sunday evening near the Lewiston exit of the Maine Turnpike.

State police stopped traffic at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday at the northbound Lewiston exit of the Maine Turnpike while crews from Lewiston battled a car fire.

LEWISTON — No one was injured when a car traveling north on the Maine Turnpike caught fire Sunday night.

The car, driven by Reshid Tahir Shankol, 46, on his way home from work in Gray, caught fire shortly after he pulled off to the right side of the highway near mile marker 80, according to State Police. Shankol told police he pulled over because of warning lights. 

Lewiston fire crews responded about 8:15 p.m., and troopers stopped traffic while the fire was put out.

There were no injuries reported, and the fire was quickly brought under control, according to State Police.
