New Sharon seeks scarecrows
NEW SHARON — Entries are being welcomed for this town’s annual scarecrow reunion that will be held Oct. 7 to Oct. 28.
Originally-created scarecrows may be entered in the categories of original, funniest, patriotic and best use of recycled materials. A fee of $10 will be charged for each scarecrow, and $5 will be reimbursed if a scarecrow and surrounding area are picked up by 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.
Entry forms are available at the New Sharon Town Office and at Douin’s Market.
Scarecrow reunion entries will be set up at the triangle parcel of land between Route 2, Mercer Road, and the Post Office Road. The exhibit area is family-friendly and scarecrows should not be frightening. Entries must be received by 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6.
The reunion is sponsored by the New Sharon Community Improvement Team.

Franklin County democrats to meet
FARMINGTON — Franklin County Democratic Committee will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Mallett School.

Science for Seniors at RPL
RUMFORD — Rumford Public Library will offer Science for Seniors from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Oct. 3 to Nov. 7.
Dr. Anne Morin, neuroscientist and author, will lead the free course.
Topics to be addressed include the parts of the cell, genetic defects, energy in living systems, early life on the planet, photosynthesis, biodiversity and biological molecules.
WWII Japanese Internment presentation
FARMINGTON — “No-No Boy: a Multi-Media Presentation on Japanese Internment” will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Emery Center, University of Maine at Farmington.
The plight of Japanese Americans forced into internment camps during World War II will come to life through historical photos, film and stories.
Historian and musician Julian Saporiti adds his own songs to the presentation, inspired by his recent research and his own experiences as a Vietnamese American growing up in Tennessee.
Saporiti formerly fronted the successful indie rock band The Young Republic and is now a doctoral candidate in American Studies at Brown University.
This is event is sponsored by the University of Maine at Farmington Diversity Lab.
VFW post members to meet
PARIS — The Floyd A. Harlow Jr. Post 9787, VFW, will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the post home, 58 East Main St.
