AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library has announced the October schedule for teen activities.
Maine Job Corps: Those ages 16 to 24 interested in serving in the Job Corps may contact Cathie Gavett at 207-458-5369 to find out more about the program and who is eligible. She will arrange a mutually convenient time to meet at the Auburn Public Library.
Teen Anime Club: Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 4 to 5 p.m., Androscoggin Community Room. Teens, ages 12 to 18, can drop in to talk about their favorite (or least favorite) manga, watch the week’s selection of anime and try a hand at drawing characters. Snacks will be provided.
Homework Help for Teens: Thursdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Teen Space. Students in grades seven to 12 may stop by the Teen Space for help in any subject giving difficulty. There will be healthy snacks. During this time, the Teen Space is reserved for those either getting a start on their homework or seeking help from the available tutor. Teens coming to hang out are asked to arrive after 4 p.m.
Teens! Comic Book Workshop: Tuesdays, Oct. 10 and 17, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Conference Room. On those dates, local artist Mike Jordan will return to present another two-part comic book workshop. On both days, Jordan, creator of the online comic, “Parverian Tales,” will offer the chance for qualified teens to be part of the staff that writes and illustrates the next “APL Presents” comic book. Teens will learn how to script, draw, letter and ink their own page(s) and with their own character; and all equipment to do so will be provided. In the end, teens will receive a copy of the book they helped to create, and there will be a mini premiere party with prizes. Gaming Hour: Wednesdays, Oct. 11 and 25, from 4 to 5 p.m., Androscoggin Community Room. There will be video games and snacks. The library has XBox and Wii and a small collection of games. Teens are welcome to bring their favorites, but only those rated T and E. For teens ages 12 to 18.
Tweens in the Teen Space: Wednesdays, Oct. 18 and 25, from noon to 2 p.m., Teen Space. Sixth-graders are invited on half-day Wednesdays to get a head start on homework, do crafts, play board games or just hang out.
Teens! DIY Takeover: Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 5 p.m., Teen Space. Each month will feature a different DIY project. In October participants will decorate the Teen Space while working on a Halloween craft. The program will include snacks and is for teens ages 12 to 18.
College Night for Teens and Parents: Thursday, Oct. 19, from 5:30 to7:30 p.m., Androscoggin Community Room. Admissions representatives from eight Maine colleges and universities will sit on a panel facilitated by a local college counselor. A brief Q&A session if time permits. Teen Matinee Movie! “The Spiderwick Chronicles”: Friday, Oct. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m., Androscoggin Community Room. The program is for teens ages 12 to 18 and will include a snack.
Safe Voices Drop-In Visit: Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 3 to 4 p.m., Teen Space. Meet Whitney from Safe Voices. Each month she will chat about relationships and work on projects. The program is for teens ages 12 to 18.
Teens! Tech Talk Tuesday: Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m., Teen Space. Have a healthy after-school snack and share conversation about technology. The program is for teens ages 12 to 18.
Teens! Throwback Thursday: Thursday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 5 p.m., Teen Space. Once a month break out favorite childhood games and snacks. For teens ages 12 to 18.
College Financing, FAFSA and FAFSA Lab: Monday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 7 p.m., Androscoggin Community Room. As a follow up to College Night, the library will help students and parents understand the financial aid process and look at ways to add to college savings and key strategies to minimize the cost of college. The program will be presented by Jessica Whittier, college access counselor at the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). Although designed for teens and their parents, anyone who is thinking about financing continuing education is welcome. Following the financial aid presentation in the Androscoggin Community Room, participants will move upstairs to the computer lab for hands-on instruction for completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Registration is required as space is limited to 12.
