’48 States in 48 Days’

FARMINGTON — During the summer of 2017, Peter Hardy, University of Maine at Farmington mathematics professor, and his family journeyed across the U.S., stepping foot in 48 states in 48 days.

The public is invited to hear how the once-in-a-lifetime journey would take the family to every state in the lower 48 and help them see that people are friendlier and the country smaller than they thought.

Hardy’s talk will highlight their journey along with scenic images, various statistics and rudimentary mathematics that they encountered on the way.

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in Lincoln Auditorium in the UMF Roberts Learning Center. It is free and open to the public.

TURNER — SAD 52 Adult & Community Education will offer a variety of courses in October. Some courses are free.

Texas Hold Em’ poker

PARIS — The AMVETS Texas Hold Em’ poker tournaments are held at from 5 p.m. to midnight on the first Friday of the month at the American Legion Hall. 

Next tournament will be Friday, Oct. 6. 

The event is open to the public. The AMVETS Auxiliary will have a food concession open from 5 p.m. until the end of second break. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Buy-in is usually $50 with a license fee of $5 and an optional $5 High Hand.

Last contra dance of season

BRYANT POND — The last contra dance of the summer series at Franklin Grange will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at 32 Main St., Route 26.

Music will be provided by the Better Late Than Never Band with Maggie Robinson calling.

Cost is $8 a person or $20 for a family maximum.

Beginners will be welcome with or without a partner. Dancers should bring clean shoes for dancing.

Canton Town Fair planned

CANTON — The Canton Recreation Department will hold the Canton Town Fair from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.

The fair offers fun for kids and adults. Kids can play carnival games, jump around in the bounce house or get a face painting.

Entertainment will include Terry Moore and Company with his musical stylings starting at noon.

The Pirates Galley Snack Shack will be open, featuring fair favorites such as sausage sandwiches, cotton candy and fried dough, along with the regular menu.

There will be crafters and vendors, and disc golf will be available.

Admission is free.

Oxford American Legion to meet

OXFORD — Anderson-Staples Post 112, American Legion, will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at 169 King St.

A potluck will start the evening. Meetings will also be held for the Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion.
