ANDOVER — Selectmen on Tuesday approved a bid of $22,500 from Swasey Excavation Inc. for 2,500 cubic yards of screened sand.

It was the only bid submitted.

Selectmen Jane Rich and Sharon Hutchins approved of the offer. Selectman Mark Thurston abstained because he works for Swasey, he said.

In other business, Hutchins told the board they will meet this month with Amy Bernard, administrative assistant for Newry, regarding changing fiscal years.

“We have questions about changing from a calendar year to a (July 1-June 30) fiscal year and we’re gathering information to present it to the town at an informational meeting,” Rich added.

The reason for changing is to have the town and School Department using the same fiscal year.

In other matters, Michael Moore of Dixfield was hired in September as code enforcement officer. Former officer Robert Folsom Jr. was hired as the town plumbing inspector.

Letters regarding eight residents’ Tree Growth program applications will be sent this week to notify them to renew their applications in March, Rich said.

Also, the town is looking for a transfer station attendant to work Tuesdays and Thursdays for nine hours a week. “We posted it before but nobody has applied,” Rich said.

Selectmen approved a new rate of 53 cents per mile for town employees. The current rate of 45 cents was set in 2006.

Broadband Committee members Bob Duplessie, Dirk MacKnight and Al Scott will present the town’s goals to Community Concepts on Wednesday, Rich said.
