NORWAY — Voters have strengthened the prohibition on retail recreational marijuana establishments that they approved at the annual town meeting in June.

Town Manager Dennis Lajoie said the amendments included specifying the type of retail recreational marijuana establishments that would be disallowed under the prohibition.

At the June town meeting, townspeople voted 371-193 to prohibit retail recreational marijuana establishments, social clubs and commercial growing of recreational marijuana.

The prohibition does not ban people from privately using marijuana.

Lajoie said the initial retail marijuana prohibition approved in June was “not reviewed by our town attorney.”

“I sent her the one we approved in June, and she suggested that the ordinance, on its face, is OK, but that she would really like to see the document strengthened,” Lajoie said. “She said that she has language that she has provided to other municipalities to add to the ordinance.”
