An advance in wages in all of the cotton mills in Maine will go into effect on Monday morning Oct. 29, according to an announcement made in Lewiston last night. Over 6,000 operatives in the Lewiston mills will be effected. It was not definitely stated how much the increase would be, but it is understood that it will amount to approximately 10 percent. The price of cotton continues to soar, and not in the history of the Lewiston mills, have running expenses, so far as labor and raw material are concerned, been as high as they are today. All of the mills are running on full time and some of them over-time. There is every reason to believe that prosperous conditions in the mills will continue.
50 years ago, 1967
The City of Auburn is the only New England community to be named a finalist in the All-American City of 1967 competition. Auburn will be considered for All-American designation against 20 other cities and one metropolitan county, according to the National Municipal League. A delegation of Auburn citizens, headed by Mayor Clyde M. Goudey and City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett, will attend the 73rd National Conference of Government at Milwaukee, Wis., during which the city’s presentation will be made to the League’s All-America Cities Awards Jury on Nov. 13-14.

Road work underway on Center Street near the Auburn Plaza in the last week is part of the improvements the plaza developers agreed to make when they were granted permission to build there. A D Construction of Sabattus to change the lane alignments at Stetson Road and extend the median to place a left hand turn lane at the northbound signal for Auburndale Shopping Center. Much of the work has been at night. “They were required to widen the road, install traffic signals at the plaza and at Stetson Road, to install a raised median at Stetson Road and Center Street and to complete concrete paving a fifth lane for north-bound traffic entering the plaza,” said Roland Miller, director of Community Development for the City of Auburn.
